My Safe Florida Home Grant 2026: How to Qualify and Get Up to $10,000 for Impact Windows

By Joe Pichardo · Onel Construction LLC · CGC1511492 · Serving Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach & Palm Beach County

Florida’s My Safe Florida Home program is one of the most valuable and underutilized benefits available to South Florida homeowners. The state pays $2 for every $1 you spend on hurricane hardening — up to $10,000 in free grant funding. Most homeowners who qualify have never heard of it.

If your home was built before 2008 and you’ve been thinking about impact windows, a new roof, or other hurricane hardening improvements, this program could cut your out-of-pocket cost in half — or more. As a licensed CGC contractor serving Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, we help homeowners navigate this process every day.

Here’s everything you need to know about the My Safe Florida Home grant in 2026 — eligibility requirements, how to apply, what’s covered, and how to maximize your benefit.

What Is the My Safe Florida Home Program?

The My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program is a state-funded initiative administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services. It was created to help Florida homeowners harden their homes against hurricane damage — reducing both storm losses and the insurance crisis that has driven premiums to record highs across the state.

The program works on a matching grant model: for every dollar you spend on qualifying hurricane hardening improvements, the state contributes two dollars — up to a maximum grant of $10,000. That means a $5,000 out-of-pocket investment can become a $15,000 project.

How the 2:1 Match Works — Real Example

Your contribution

$5,000

State grant (2:1 match)

$10,000

Total project value

$15,000

For lower-income homeowners who meet specific income thresholds, the program offers grants with no matching requirement — meaning the state covers 100% of the cost up to the grant maximum.

Do You Qualify? — The 2026 Eligibility Requirements

Home Permitted Before Jan. 1, 2008

The single most important requirement. If your home was built and permitted before 2008, you clear the biggest hurdle.

Active Homeowner's Insurance Policy

You must have a current, active homeowner's insurance policy on the property at the time of application.

Insured Value $700,000 or Less

The home's insured value must be at or below $700,000. Most standard Palm Beach County homes qualify.

Primary Residence

The property must be your primary residence — not a rental property, vacation home, or investment property.

Licensed CGC Contractor Required

All work must be performed by a Florida-licensed CGC contractor. Onel Construction (CGC1511492) fully qualifies.

Home Built After 2008

Homes permitted after January 1, 2008 do not qualify for this program. Modern construction codes already require hurricane-resistant features.

What Does the Grant Cover?

The My Safe Florida Home grant covers a specific list of hurricane hardening improvements. Not all home improvements qualify — the program is focused specifically on wind mitigation and opening protection.

How to Apply — Step by Step

1. FREE WIND MITIGATION INSPECTION

The program begins with a state-funded wind mitigation inspection of your home. This inspection documents your home’s current hurricane protection features and identifies what qualifies for improvement. The inspection is free to homeowners through the program.

2. APPLY ONLINE AT MYSAFEFLHOME.COM

Submit your application through the program’s online portal. You’ll need your property address, insurance policy information, and proof that your home was permitted before 2008 (available through your county property appraiser’s website).

3. RECEIVE YOUR GRANT AWARD LETTER

Once approved, you’ll receive a grant award letter specifying your maximum grant amount. This letter is your authorization to proceed with the approved improvements.

4. HIRE A LICENSED CGC CONTRACTOR

Select a Florida-licensed CGC contractor to perform the work. The contractor must be licensed — not just registered — and must pull all required permits. Onel Construction (CGC1511492) is fully qualified and experienced with grant-funded projects.

5. WORK COMPLETED & INSPECTED

Work is performed, permits are pulled and inspected, and a post-installation wind mitigation inspection verifies the improvements. All documentation is submitted to the program.

6. GRANT FUNDS DISBURSED

After verification, the state disburses your grant funds. You pay your contribution amount; the state pays the rest directly to the contractor or reimburses you depending on the payment structure agreed upon.

⚡ Important: Funding Is First-Come, First-Served

The My Safe Florida Home program has faced high demand and funding gaps in past cycles. Governor DeSantis's 2026-2027 budget proposes over $600 million in new funding — but grants are awarded in the order applications are received. Homeowners who wait often miss the funding window entirely. If you think you qualify, applying as early as possible is strongly recommended.
